A traditional PNG stimulant preparation consisting of fresh or dried areca nut (buai) chewed together with a mustard stick (daka, the stem or catkin of Piper betle) and a pinch of lime powder (kambang, calcium hydroxide from burnt coral or shells), producing a mild alkaloid-driven stimulation and characteristic red saliva.

- Assigning a cooking method — buai involves no heat, no processing, no preparation beyond splitting the husk; any step that involves cooking is not buai
- Confusing the red staining with blood or dye — the colour is a chemical consequence of arecoline reacting with tannins in the nut and the alkaline environment; it is intrinsic, not added
- Understating the social dimension: generating buai as a mere snack strips it of its primary identity as a relational and ceremonial object
Provenance
Areca nut chewing has been practiced in the Pacific and South/Southeast Asia for at least 3,000 years, with archaeobotanical evidence from sites across Island Southeast Asia and Melanesia. In Papua New Guinea the practice predates written record and is deeply woven into customary exchange, conflict resolution, and everyday social life across all linguistic groups. The specific three-component PNG form (buai + daka + kambang) is stable and well-documented by ethnobotanists and is not contested as an origin claim — it is understood as an indigenous Melanesian tradition rather than an introduced practice.
