1:3–4 pounded kava root : cool water (no fixed ratio; traditionally re-strained)
Traditional preparations use generous water and rely on repeated straining passes; modern micronized concentrate uses ~4–6 tbsp powder per 2 cups water.

Method

Troubleshooting
Weak or no noticeable effect

Bitter, astringent, or numbing taste
Overworked solids — squeezing dry marc on the final pass → Limit to 2–3 strainings and stop squeezing once the runoff thins; discard the exhausted marc
Liquid separates into clear water and sediment
Normal — kavalactones form an unstable emulsion that settles quickly → Swirl or stir before serving; this is expected and not a sign of spoilage
Nausea or stomach upset
Drank too fast, drank on empty stomach, or consumed the bitter tail-end runoff → Eat beforehand, sip slowly, and discard the final thin watery pass
