Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion

Convert any Celsius temperature to Fahrenheit with one formula: (°C × 9/5) + 32.
The arithmetic bridge between the Celsius (centigrade) scale used across most of the world and the Fahrenheit scale dominant in American cookbooks and consumer oven dials. Mastering a handful of anchor points — freezing, simmering, candy stages, Maillard onset — is more practical than computing every number from scratch.

- Offset constant — Added last to shift the zero point from water's freezing (0 °C) to 32 °F
Method
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide the result by 5, then add 32. For a quick mental estimate, double the Celsius value and add 30 — accurate to within ≈3 °F across the cooking range. To reverse (°F to °C), subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9.
Tips
- Memorise the six anchor points every cook needs: 0 °C/32 °F (freeze), 100 °C/212 °F (boil), 160 °C/320 °F (Maillard onset on dry surfaces), 180 °C/356 °F (typical bake), 230 °C/446 °F (blast roast/pizza), 260 °C/500 °F (broil/steel plate sear).
- When converting a recipe, double-check whether the original uses a fan/convection oven — European recipes often assume fan, which runs about 20 °C (36 °F) hotter than an equivalent conventional setting.
- Candy and sugar temperatures have zero tolerance for rounding: always convert precisely rather than using the approximation shortcut.
- Deep-fry oils rarely exceed 205 °C (400 °F) before hitting smoke points; if a recipe specifies higher, verify the oil's smoke point first.
- Probe thermometers sold in the US often display only °F; consider a dual-mode model so you can cross-check recipes from either tradition.

Why two scales still coexist
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit proposed his scale in 1724, calibrated to body temperature and the coldest brine he could make. Anders Celsius introduced his scale in 1742, anchored to water's phase transitions. Most of the world adopted Celsius for scientific and everyday use; the United States retained Fahrenheit on consumer appliances, which is why American cookbooks still specify 350 °F where a British book would write 175 °C.
