French Press Ratio (1:12 to 1:15)

1 gram of coarsely ground coffee to 12–15 grams of water, adjusted for roast and personal body preference.
The French press immersion ratio governs the concentration of coffee extracted when ground coffee steeps in near-boiling water for 3–5 minutes before the metal mesh plunger is depressed. Unlike filtered methods, the full-immersion contact and unfiltered brew retain coffee oils (cafestol and kahweol) and micro-fines, which lend the cup body and texture. This fuller mouthfeel means that a slightly higher coffee-to-water ratio (closer to 1:12) often reads as balanced where the same concentration in a paper-filtered pour-over would taste overwhelming. The range 1:12 to 1:15 brackets the spectrum from rich and robust to lighter and more delicate.

Method
Heat water to 93–96 °C. Preheat the French press with a splash of hot water, then discard. Add coarsely ground coffee (1 g per 12–15 g water). Pour a small bloom of water (2× coffee weight), stir once, and wait 30 seconds for CO₂ to degas. Add remaining water, place the lid loosely on top with the plunger pulled up, and steep 4 minutes. Press the plunger slowly and steadily over 20–30 seconds — fast pressing agitates sediment. Decant immediately into a serving vessel; leaving brew on grounds continues extraction and turns it bitter.
Tips
- Weigh water and coffee on a scale — volume measurements for coffee are notoriously inconsistent because grind density varies by roast level.
- Coarse grind is non-negotiable: fine particles slip through the mesh, over-extract during steep, and produce astringent, gritty cups.
- Always decant after pressing. Many French press errors are actually over-extraction from letting the brew sit on the grounds for 10+ minutes.
- For cleaner cups, let the brew rest 3–4 minutes after pressing before pouring — sediment settles to the bottom of the carafe.
- The French press is forgiving of water temperature variation compared to pour-over; 90–96 °C all produce acceptable results, adjusting character more than balance.

Why the French press tolerates a stronger ratio
Paper filters in pour-over methods absorb the oils (cafestol, kahweol) and trap micro-fines that otherwise contribute body and textural weight. A 1:15 French press and a 1:15 pour-over with the same beans will taste markedly different — the press cup registers as heavier, more bitter, and more complex. This means the press drinker can often dilute slightly without losing perceived strength, or inversely, brew toward 1:12 and achieve a robustness that paper-filter methods require espresso to match.
Sediment management
French press sediment is not a defect — it is characteristic — but excessive fines signal grind that is too fine. A coarser grind (700–1000 microns) reduces the fines that pass through the mesh. Some enthusiasts pour through a secondary paper filter for a hybrid cup that keeps the brew richness but clarifies the texture. Neither approach is wrong; they represent different expressions of the same ratio.
