Cake Board

Sturdy base that supports and transports finished cakes

A rigid round or square board that supports a frosted cake so you can lift, transport, and display it without it bending or breaking. Use one the same size for a clean edge, or larger for a border. Greaseproof, food-safe boards keep frosting tidy.

A cake board is a rigid round or square base — corrugated cardboard, foil-covered board, or a thick 'drum' — that supports a frosted cake so you can lift, move, and display it without it bowing, cracking, or sliding off a flexible surface. It's the unglamorous foundation of cake transport and stacked tiers: each tier sits on its own board, the whole cake rests on a sturdier drum, and you can carry a finished cake to the party with confidence. Greaseproof, food-safe boards keep frosting tidy and presentation clean.

Types & varieties

Cake circle / thin board

Lightweight cardboard round, one per cake or tier.

Cake drum

Thick, sturdy board for heavy single cakes and the base of tiered cakes.

Foil-covered board

Decorative greaseproof finish for presentation.

Sizing the board

Use a board the same diameter as the cake for a clean, flush edge, or go an inch or two larger if you want a visible border around the cake. For stacked cakes, each tier sits on a board its own size, and the entire stack rests on a thick drum at least as wide as the bottom tier to bear the weight.

  • Same-size board for a flush edge
  • Larger board for a visible border
  • A thick drum under tiered or heavy cakes

Keeping the cake put

Dab a little frosting or piping gel on the board before setting the cake down so it can't slide while you frost or transport it. Use greaseproof boards so butter and oil don't soak through and weaken the cardboard. For tall tiered cakes, internal dowels carry the load between boarded tiers.

Tips & pitfalls

  • Match the board to the cake size for a clean edge, or size up for a border.
  • Stick the cake down with a dab of frosting so it won't slide during transport.
  • Use a thick drum under heavy or tiered cakes — a thin board will sag.
  • Choose greaseproof, food-safe boards so butter doesn't bleed through.
  • Give each tier its own board, and dowel between tiers to carry the weight.
