A coffee filter is a disposable paper cone or basket that traps grounds while letting brewed coffee pass through. Metal and cloth filters allow more oils through than paper, resulting in a fuller-bodied brew with slightly more texture. Rinsing: The Step Most People Skip
Rinsing your coffee filter before brewing is not optional in serious coffee preparation—it is essential. Hot water removes loose paper fibers that would otherwise end up in your cup, eliminates any papery or cardboard taste, and preheats the brewer for more stable brewing temperatures. For pour-over methods, pour hot water in a circular motion to wet the entire filter surface evenly, then discard the rinse water.
