Grain Barrier Bag Liner
A hermetic moisture- and oxygen-barrier liner that keeps stored grain, coffee, and beans dry and pest-free.
A grain barrier bag liner is a multi-layer plastic liner (such as GrainPro) that creates a near-hermetic seal inside a sack or bin. Coffee producers, millers, and bulk-dry-goods cooks use it to lock out moisture and oxygen so grains, green coffee, and beans hold their quality and resist mold and insects. Sealing tightly starves any pests of oxygen, preserving flavor and germination far longer than a plain woven sack.
A grain barrier bag liner — most often called a Mylar bag — is a flexible, multi-layer pouch built specifically to shut oxygen and water vapor out of dry food storage. The typical construction sandwiches an inner food-grade polyethylene layer, an outer polyester skin, and a middle barrier of either metalized aluminum or true aluminum foil. The foil layer is what gives these bags their signature near-zero oxygen and moisture transmission, and it is the same technology that has protected military MREs and pharmaceutical blister packs for decades. To a home cook, the practical effect is simple: put a properly dried grain inside, drop in an oxygen absorber, heat-seal the opening, and the contents will hold their quality and remain pest-free for many years on a pantry shelf.
The bag does not do the work of drying. A barrier liner only protects whatever moisture, oxygen, and pest pressure was already present at the moment of sealing. Grains sealed at above 10% moisture will mold inside even a perfect bag, and food that is already infested with weevil eggs will continue to develop once the seal is closed. The bags also do not replace rigid containers in every situation: a 5-gallon pail lined with a Mylar bag, capped with a tight lid, gives you the combined benefit of puncture resistance, stackability, and a true hermetic seal, and is the standard long-term-storage combination used by emergency-prep and small-mill communities alike.

Sealing a Mylar bag with a household iron
Most home cooks seal these bags with a plain clothing iron, which is fast, cheap, and surprisingly reliable once you have a feel for it. The goal is a continuous weld at least a quarter inch wide with no channels or cold spots, because even a hairline gap defeats the barrier.
- Fill the bag no more than about 80% full so the seal sits on flat film, not on product.
- Press out as much air as possible by hand, then drop in the correct oxygen absorber (roughly 300 cc for a quart bag, 2000 cc for a 5-gallon bag).
- Lay a flat wooden ruler or a piece of folded parchment over the open edge to keep the seal line even and prevent the iron from melting the bag's corner.
- Run the iron on its highest dry-heat setting (no steam) along the edge for 10–15 seconds; thicker bags need two slow passes.
- Wait ten seconds, then press the seam flat with your thumb. A good seal looks glossy, feels uniform, and shows no pinholes when held to a light.
Matching bag type to storage goal
Not every barrier bag is built for the same job, and the cheapest option is rarely the right one for multi-year storage. A simple rule of thumb: if you plan to rotate the contents within a year, metalized PET is fine; if you want the bag to sit untouched for two years or more, choose a true foil laminate and pair it with an oxygen absorber.
The moisture-content trap
The most common reason a sealed bag of grain spoils is that the grain went in too wet. Mylar is a barrier, not a desiccant; it locks in whatever water is already present. Wheat, rice, oats, and beans should be dried to below 10% moisture (verifiable with a grain moisture meter) and cooled to ambient room temperature before bagging. Trapped warmth and humidity will condense on the inside of the film and feed mold even inside a perfect seal.

Tips & pitfalls
- Match the oxygen absorber size to the bag volume — roughly 100–300 cc for a quart, 300–500 cc for a gallon, and 1500–2000 cc for a 5-gallon pail liner — and add it just before you seal so it does not pre-saturate.
- Press the sealed bag flat and look for any air channels traveling through the weld; a single channel means a failed seal and the bag must be cut and resealed, not patched.
- Do not reuse bags that previously held raw legumes, pet kibble, or anything prone to weevil eggs; residual eggs hatch readily inside a warm, oxygen-reduced environment.
- Store filled bags cool, dark, and off the floor — concrete wicks moisture and can compromise a seal at the bottom of a stack.
- Label every bag with contents, packing date, and weight using a permanent marker or printed label before you seal; once the bag is closed, identifying unmarked bags requires cutting it open.
- Choose true foil-layer bags (not just metalized PET) for any storage horizon beyond two to three years; metalized film is acceptable for fast-rotating coffee and pantry goods.
- Nestle sharp items like dried pasta, bouillon cubes, or stock cubes inside a folded paper towel or soft cloth before bagging to prevent punctures.
- When using a bucket liner, fold the excess bag over the pail rim and clamp it under a gamma-seal lid for combined rigid and flexible protection against pests, light, and oxygen.
