Shrink Sleeve Label

A heat-shrink plastic sleeve that wraps a bottle neck or jar for a tamper-evident seal.

A shrink sleeve label is a plastic band slipped over a bottle or jar closure that tightens when heated with steam or a heat gun. Home canners, brewers, and oil bottlers use it to seal and finish products with a clean, professional, tamper-evident look. The sleeve also keeps corks and lids secure during storage.

A shrink sleeve label is a printed plastic tube that slips over a bottle or jar and contracts tight when heat is applied, conforming to the container like a second skin. The polymer film is manufactured in an oriented state — stretched during production so that subsequent reheating causes the molecules to relax and the sleeve to shrink, mostly sideways, around the pack. In commercial packaging lines this happens in a steam or hot-air tunnel running hundreds of containers per minute; in a test kitchen or cottage-food shop, a heat gun or a hair dryer on maximum will do the job on small PVC bands.

For most cooks, shrink sleeves are encountered as the tamper-evident band on a bottle of olive oil, a jar of salsa, or a craft soda — the tight plastic ring around the cap or neck that must be torn, peeled, or cut before the product can be opened. They also appear as full-body labels on contoured bottles, prized because the 360° print surface turns an irregular shape into a billboard. Less visibly, the same technology bundles multipacks of water, yogurt, and single-serve drinks, and increasingly shows up on small-batch and cottage-food products that want the polished look of commercial packaging.

The polymer chosen matters more than it looks. PVC is inexpensive and shrinks at low temperature, but most curbside recycling programs reject it and it can interact over time with high-alcohol or strongly oil-based contents. PET and PLA are the modern alternatives — recyclable in PET-stream facilities and more chemically inert, though they need more heat to activate and PLA breaks down only in industrial composting facilities. Knowing the difference helps when sourcing packaging for a product you are developing, and when deciding whether to leave a sleeve on or strip it off before tossing the empty in the bin.

Types & varieties

Tamper-evident neck band

Short sleeve around the cap and finish, usually perforated so it breaks cleanly on first opening — the form a cook encounters most often.

Reading a shrink sleeve at a glance

A few quick tells help identify what you are holding and how to dispose of it.

  • A clear or lightly tinted ring only around the cap and neck is almost always a tamper-evident band — tear it off and discard before recycling the bottle, unless the local program explicitly accepts them.
  • A printed sleeve that covers the whole container is a full-body label; it usually shrinks so tightly that paper labels cannot be peeled off cleanly, which is one reason shrink sleeves are chosen for shaped bottles.
  • PET sleeves tend to feel crisper and snap more cleanly when torn; PVC often feels softer and more rubbery, and can carry a faint plasticizer smell up close.
  • A horizontal perforation line halfway up the bottle is a combination sleeve — tear at the perforation to separate the tamper band from the body label.

Opening one cleanly

A poorly designed or stubborn band can be opened without a knife and without spilling the contents.

  • Look for a pull tab or a vertical perforation strip; if present, lift it and peel downward in one motion.
  • If there is a perforation but no tab, pinch the sleeve at the perforated line and tear sideways — twisting as you go helps the tear track along the engineered line.
  • For a smooth, unperforated band, slide the back of a knife or the edge of a fingernail under the rim to puncture the film, then peel downward. Working from below hides any mark on the cap.
  • Avoid prying with a sharp blade near the cap; the cap is often the only thing keeping the contents in the bottle.

Choosing packaging for a product you are developing

Small-batch producers — hot sauce, infused oil, shrub, syrup, fermented hot condiment — are increasingly turning to shrink sleeves to match the polish of larger brands. A few decisions made up front save headaches later.

  • Match the polymer to the contents. Anything above roughly 20% ABV (vanilla extract, tincture-style bitters, alcoholic shrubs) or anything with a high essential-oil load belongs in PET or PLA, not PVC.
  • Match the shrink ratio to the container. Standard cylinders accept 50–60% transverse shrink; contoured or tapered bottles need lower ratios or pre-distorted sleeves to avoid puckering.
  • Plan for the heat source. Steam tunnels are gentlest and reach recesses; hot air is faster but can scorch; a heat gun is fine for short runs but gives uneven results on tall or shaped bottles.
  • Order a perforation if you want a tamper-evident band that opens cleanly; an unperforated band is harder to remove and frustrates the customer.
  • If recyclability is part of the brand story, ask the sleeve supplier for a PET-G grade with documented float-separation in PET recycling, and confirm the local materials recovery facility actually accepts the result.

Tips & pitfalls

  • Pre-warm glass jars before applying heat — a sudden temperature swing on cold glass can crack the container and ruin the seal.
  • Prefer steam over dry heat for irregularly shaped containers; steam reaches recessed areas more evenly and is less likely to scorch the print.
  • Rotate the container by hand or on a turntable when using a heat gun, otherwise the facing side shrinks faster than the back and you get wrinkles.
  • Oversize the sleeve diameter slightly above the container's maximum circumference. Undersized sleeves wrinkle and tear; oversized ones shrink into a clean, tight fit.
  • Do not overheat. PVC scorches and turns brown around 140 °C, and the sleeve becomes brittle and cracks instead of gripping the bottle.
  • Store unapplied rolls in a cool, dry space away from sunlight. Humidity curls the open edges of seamed tubes and jams sleeving equipment; warmth can cause premature shrinkage.
  • If the product contains alcohol above about 20% ABV or high concentrations of essential oils, choose PET or PLA over PVC to avoid long-term interaction with the contents.
  • After application, let the container cool fully before case-packing. A still-warm sleeve can scuff, shift, or stick to neighboring containers under pressure.
