Box Grater
Four-sided grater with a face for every texture
A sturdy four-sided grater offering coarse shred, fine grate, slicing, and zesting on one tool that stands stable on the board. Great for cheese, vegetables, and potatoes. Grate downward over a plate and watch your knuckles near the bottom.
A box grater puts four textures on one stable, four-sided tool: coarse shred, fine grate, slicing, and zesting. Because it stands on its own, it's steadier and safer than a flat grater, and it catches shreds inside if you grate into the box. It's the most versatile single grater most kitchens own.
Types & varieties
The classic. Look for a wide, stable base and a comfortable top handle.
Grates straight into a measuring container with a lid — tidy and lets you measure as you go.
Rubber-footed bottom so it won't skate across the board while you push.
Using each face
The large holes shred cheese, potatoes, and cabbage; the small holes finely grate hard cheese, garlic, and chocolate; the slotted face slices cucumbers and potatoes thin; and the spiky rasp side handles zest and nutmeg. Grate straight down with the whole stroke and ease off well before the food gets too small to hold.
- Coarse face: cheese, potatoes, cabbage, carrots
- Fine face: hard cheese, garlic, chocolate
- Slicing slot: thin cucumber, potato, onion
- Rasp face: citrus zest and nutmeg
Common uses
Tips & pitfalls
- Grate into the box itself to keep shreds contained and your board clear.
- Set the grater on a damp towel or use a non-slip base so it doesn't slide.
- Chill soft cheese before shredding so it doesn't gum up the holes.
- Watch your knuckles near the bottom of the box — stop before the chunk is too small.
- Use the slicing slot for fast, even cucumber and potato rounds without a knife.
