Body Glass: Soda-Lime vs Borosilicate

The two glasses behave differently under heat, and the right pick depends on how you actually use the container. For most home cooks who reheat in the microwave and store in the fridge, soda-lime is perfectly adequate and significantly cheaper. If you regularly take a container from the freezer into a moderate oven, or do sous-vide-style low-temperature cooks in a lidded glass dish, borosilicate's wider thermal-shock tolerance is worth the premium.

  • Soda-lime (standard): the most common and affordable; tolerates roughly a 99°F / 55°C temperature swing; fine for fridge-to-microwave routines.
  • Borosilicate (premium): often rated to 500°F / 260°C; tolerates much wider thermal swings; heavier and considerably more expensive; examples include European Pyrex and several 'laboratory-grade' lines.
  • Note on US Pyrex: since the late 1980s, US-made Pyrex has been soda-lime; borosilicate Pyrex is still the norm in Europe. The same brand name can mean different glass depending on the market.

On 'Leak-Proof' Claims

Marketing language around airtight and leak-proof deserves a little skepticism. Snap-lock clasps and gasket seals are genuinely leak-resistant for normal transport — a lunch bag carried upright, a brief car ride — but they are not pressure-tested for an inverted bag bouncing around for hours, and they will not save you if the gasket is old, warped, or crusted with food.

  • For soups, stews, and oily dressings, snap-lock clasps with a silicone gasket are the safest bet.
  • For dry lunches, snacks, and overnight oats, a snap plastic lid or even a stretch silicone lid is plenty.
  • Test a new container before trusting it: fill with water, seal, and leave it on its side on a towel overnight.
  • Replace any container whose gasket has hardened, cracked, or lost its grip — the seal is the part that fails first, not the glass.

  • Hand-wash silicone gaskets regularly (or remove them and run on the dishwasher top rack) — trapped food and moisture in the seal is the main cause of lingering smells and mildew.
  • Don't use metal scouring pads or abrasive cleansers; they can micro-scratch tempered glass and, over time, weaken it.
  • Bamboo lids should never be soaked, microwaved, or put in the dishwasher; wipe with a damp cloth and dry upright.
  • For stuck-on odors (curry, kimchi, garlic), do an overnight soak with baking soda and warm water, or a brief soak with a diluted vinegar rinse.
  • Glass is heavier than plastic — if you carry several containers daily, the weight adds up quickly in a lunch bag and a backpack.
