Definition
Both the Minion Method and the Snake Method are strategies for extending a charcoal burn far beyond the 1–2 hours achievable from a standard fully-lit load — enabling the 6–12+ hour cooks required for brisket, pork shoulder, and spare ribs without lifting the lid to add fuel. The Minion Method, named for competition pitmaster Jim Minion who popularized it on the Virtual Weber Bullet forum in the late 1990s, is designed for bullet-style smokers such as the Weber Smokey Mountain. A large volume of unlit charcoal (and wood chunks for smoke) is loaded into the fire ring; a smaller quantity of fully-lit coals (from a chimney starter) is poured into the center or on top. The lit coals gradually ignite the surrounding unlit coals from the inside outward, creating a slow, self-sustaining burn. Vent management controls combustion rate and thus temperature. The Snake Method (also called the C-method or fuse method) is the adaptation for kettle grills, where the circular firebox shape is used to create a crescent or C-shaped arc of unlit briquettes two or three coals wide and two layers deep. A small number of lit coals is placed at one end of the arc; the fire burns progressively along the snake like a slow fuse. Wood chunks or chips placed along the snake provide sequential smoke flavor as each section ignites. Because the snake never burns all at once, peak temperatures stay in the 225–275 °F (107–135 °C) range ideal for low-and-slow. Both methods share the same logic: staged sequential combustion of a large unlit fuel bed, ignited from a small lit nucleus. Critical variables include charcoal quality and uniformity (briquettes work better than irregular lump for these methods), cooker seal integrity (lid gaskets matter enormously), ambient temperature and wind, and precise vent calibration. Neither method requires opening the cooker, which is a significant advantage — lid lifts cause 15–25 minute temperature dips that compound across a long cook.

Briquettes vs. Lump for These Methods
Both techniques benefit significantly from uniform, dense briquettes rather than irregular lump charcoal. Lump's varied shapes create unpredictable air gaps, causing hot spots in the snake or uneven spread in the Minion pile. Pillow-shaped briquettes pack consistently and provide the slow, predictable sequential burn these methods depend on.
Water Pan Role
In bullet smokers using the Minion Method, the water pan serves as both a heat sink (buffering temperature spikes) and a humidity source (keeping the cook chamber moist to slow surface bark hardening). Some pitmasters substitute sand or a clay flower-pot saucer for the water pan to eliminate the need to refill it on long cooks.
Duration Limits
A fully loaded Weber Smokey Mountain (18-inch) running the Minion Method with briquettes can hold 225–250 °F for 12–16 hours before needing fuel. A standard 22-inch kettle snake typically runs 6–8 hours. For overnight cooks beyond these windows, insulated kamado cookers (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe) or dedicated offset smokers with large fireboxes are more practical.
